A Perfect Mix of Traditional and Exclusive Cuisine
The Algarve itself has a mix of eateries, including Michelin-starred restaurants and quaint seafood shacks. It’s a place where you can enjoy a regional salad of tomatoes, raw onion, oregano and cucumber, and fish so fresh it’s on your plate almost straight from the sea.
In the picturesque streets of Lagos you’ll find the traditional Petiscos de Taberna, Portuguese snacks, similar to Spanish Tapas. These small meat sandwiches, seafood fritters and cured sausage go brilliantly with a glass of local beer. Then behind the bustle you can join locals in a fiery glass of locally brewed brandy.
Portugal is famous for its seafood but perhaps less well known is Portugal’s cured sausage. It’s a national delicacy, with festivals held throughout the year.
Try a Regional Wine from the Algarve
The Algarve also boasts four regions with their own specific wine varieties. Think refreshing reds and light whites – each regional variety has its own protected designation of origin status. Portugal’s reputation for good wine is growing and most wines are made in small cooperatives from local grape varieties.
